Tips For Soothing Babies

Mar 4, 2025 | By: Jena Craig Photography

As a fine art newborn photographer, I’ve spent countless hours working with babies, learning their cues, and helping parents create a calm environment for their little ones. Over the years, I’ve developed techniques not only for capturing beautiful, peaceful images but also for soothing newborns when they’re unsettled. Whether you’re a new parent or simply looking for ways to calm your baby, here are ten tried-and-true steps to help.

1. Swaddle for Comfort

One of the first things I do in my studio is gently swaddle newborns. The snug feeling reminds them of the womb, keeping them secure and calm. A well-swaddled baby is often a happy, relaxed baby.

2. Hold Them Close

Newborns crave warmth and closeness. Holding your baby skin-to-skin can regulate their body temperature and heartbeat, making them feel safe—just like when I position them for those serene, sleepy portraits.

3. Use Gentle Motion

Rocking, swaying, or bouncing lightly can work wonders. In my sessions, I often use a slow, rhythmic sway while holding a baby, which helps them relax and settle into a peaceful state.

4. Try White Noise or Soft Sounds

Soft, rhythmic sounds mimic the womb’s environment. I always have a white noise machine running in my studio—it’s a lifesaver for calming fussy babies and creating a soothing atmosphere.

5. Offer a Pacifier

If a baby is unsettled during a session, a pacifier often does the trick. The sucking reflex is a powerful self-soothing tool, and even a few moments with a pacifier can work wonders.

6. Check for Basic Needs

Before every portrait session, I always remind parents to check if their baby needs a feeding, a diaper change, or just a little warmth. These simple adjustments often make all the difference in keeping a baby comfortable.

7. Warmth

Babies love to be warm and cozy. When changing baby's diaper or clothing I often use a space heater nearby. I make sure the heater is also directed at me so that I can make sure it's not getting too hot.

8. Create a Calm Environment

In my studio, I keep the space warm, dimly lit, and free of loud noises. A peaceful setting helps babies feel at ease, making it easier for them to drift off to sleep—something parents can replicate at home.

9. Burp Your Baby

Gas bubbles can make a newborn uncomfortable and restless. I always suggest a quick burping session before swaddling or soothing, ensuring their tummy feels at ease. For a gassy baby sometimes it helps to tuck their knees up against their bodies. They love this curled up position, and the bonus is it is super cute for portraits.

10. Be Patient and Stay Calm

Newborns are incredibly intuitive; they pick up on your emotions. Whether I’m handling a fussy baby during a session or advising parents at home, I always emphasize the importance of staying calm and patient—it makes a world of difference.

Final Thoughts

Having worked with hundreds of newborns, I’ve learned that soothing techniques are just as valuable in everyday parenting as they are in photography sessions. Every baby is unique, so experiment with these methods to see what works best for yours. With time, you’ll develop the confidence and instincts to calm your little one with ease. I’ve seen firsthand how a calm baby leads to a more relaxed parent, and I promise—those peaceful moments will come. Cherish the snuggles, trust yourself, and know that you’re doing an amazing job.
