Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most extraordinary moments, and capturing those first days through a newborn portrait session creates memories you will cherish forever. To help you feel relaxed and confident, we’ve put together a guide on what to wear, what to bring, and how to best prepare for your newborn session.
For Baby:
Our studio provides a curated selection of timeless wraps, delicate knits, and simple props designed to photograph beautifully. You won’t need to bring anything for your newborn unless there’s something particularly sentimental you would love to include, like a family heirloom or a special handmade blanket.
For Parents and Siblings:
• Keep it neutral: Soft shades like ivory, beige, pale grey, and muted pastels photograph beautifully and ensure the focus stays on the connection and emotion.
• Simple is best: Solid colors without logos or busy patterns create a timeless look.
• Comfort matters: Choose clothing that feels good and allows you to snuggle close without feeling restricted.
• Coordinate, don’t match: Aim for complementary colors rather than identical outfits for a natural, cohesive feel.
We are happy to provide wardrobe styling advice ahead of your session to make the process even easier.
Although we have almost everything you’ll need at the studio, here are a few essentials we recommend bringing:
• Feeding supplies — whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, bring what you need to keep baby content and relaxed. Bring extra. Sometimes babies need a little extra on portrait day.
• Extra diapers and wipes — newborns go through more than you might expect during a session! We have extras if needed.
• A pacifier — even if your baby doesn’t normally use one, it can be very helpful for soothing between poses.
• A change of clothes for parents — just in case of any little accidents during cuddly moments.
Plan for a sleepy baby:
Try to keep your newborn awake for a little while before your session and offer a full feeding when you arrive. A well-fed, sleepy baby is ideal for those sweet, curled-up poses.
Dress baby loosely:
If possible, dress your baby in something easy to remove (like a zip-up sleeper) to avoid disturbing them when it’s time to start. Avoid anything that needs to be pulled over the head.
Relax and trust the process:
Newborn sessions are slow-paced and completely baby-led. We take breaks for feeding, changing, and soothing as needed. Our goal is to create a calm, relaxed environment so both you and your baby feel at ease.
Communicate any special requests:
If there’s a pose, family combination, or heirloom you would love included, let us know ahead of time so we can plan accordingly.
A Final Thought:
This fleeting newborn stage passes faster than we can ever imagine. Preparing thoughtfully for your session allows us to focus on capturing the love, tenderness, and awe of this incredible season of life. We are so honored to preserve these memories for you.
