The First Two Weeks: Why Timing Matters for Newborn Portraiture

Apr 16 2026 | By: Jena Craig Photography

There is a quiet, fleeting window at the very beginning of your baby’s life—one that passes almost before you have time to take it in.

The first two weeks.

It’s a season defined by softness. By stillness. By the delicate, curled-up nature of a baby who has only just arrived in the world.

And while every stage of your child’s life is worth remembering, there is something truly unique about these earliest days—something that cannot be recreated once it has passed.

A Time Unlike Any Other

During the first 7–14 days, newborns are naturally sleepier and more easily settled. They still carry the gentle curl of the womb, instinctively tucking into the soft, organic poses that define classic newborn portraiture.

It’s during this time that we are able to create those timeless images—baby peacefully resting, hands tucked beneath their chin, tiny features relaxed and serene.

As the days go on, babies begin to stretch, wake more easily, and become more aware of their surroundings. While older newborn portraits are still beautiful, the style and approach naturally shift.

The earliest days offer something distinct.

Something fleeting.

The Art of Capturing What Changes So Quickly

Newborns change rapidly—sometimes day by day.

The fullness of their cheeks, the softness of their skin, the way they instinctively curl into themselves… these are the details that begin to fade almost immediately.

Portraiture during this stage is not simply about documenting a baby.

It’s about preserving a moment that quietly disappears.

Why Planning Ahead Matters

One of the most common things we hear from new parents is:
“I didn’t realize how quickly those first days would go.”

Between preparing for baby’s arrival and adjusting to life at home, it’s easy for time to slip by.

That’s why newborn sessions are best reserved during pregnancy—typically in the second trimester. Rather than scheduling for a specific day, we reserve a place on our calendar based on your due date, allowing flexibility once baby arrives.

This ensures that when your baby is here, everything is already in place.

No last-minute stress.
No uncertainty.
Just a thoughtfully prepared experience, ready when you are.

A Gentle, Unhurried Experience

Newborn sessions are designed to move at your baby’s pace.

There is time for feeding, soothing, and simply pausing when needed. The studio is kept warm and calm, creating an environment where both baby and parents can feel at ease.

For many mothers, this becomes a rare moment to sit, breathe, and take in the beauty of this new season—while knowing every detail is being carefully handled.

If You’ve Already Passed the Two-Week Window

If your baby has already arrived and is beyond those first two weeks, please know—it is never too late to capture this time.

While the style may shift slightly to accommodate a more awake and alert baby, the connection, emotion, and meaning remain just as powerful.

Every stage holds its own kind of beauty.

Choosing with Intention

The first two weeks are brief—but what they hold is lasting.

Choosing to preserve this moment ensures that long after it has passed, you will still have something tangible to return to. Something that brings you back to the very beginning.

Because these early days deserve to be remembered—not just in your heart, but in a way you can see, hold, and share.

Frequently Asked Questions About Newborn Timing

What is the ideal age for newborn portraits?

The ideal window is between 7–14 days after birth, when babies are typically sleepier and more naturally curled for those timeless, peaceful images.

What if my baby arrives earlier or later than expected?

We reserve your session based on your due date and adjust once your baby arrives. This allows flexibility while still ensuring a place on our calendar.

Can we book after the baby is born?

If availability allows, we do accept last-minute reservations. However, because we take a limited number of newborns each month, reserving during pregnancy is strongly recommended.

What if my baby is older than two weeks?

We can absolutely still create beautiful portraits. Sessions are gently adjusted to suit your baby’s stage, focusing on connection and natural moments.

How long does a newborn session take?

Sessions are unhurried and typically last 2–3 hours, allowing time for feeding, soothing, and keeping your baby comfortable throughout.
